Topic: Heat Transfer

If thermal conductivity of a material varies as K0(1+alpha*T), temperature at the center of a 10 cm thick wall of material will be

  • A. Average of the temperature at two ends of the wall
  • B. More than the average of the temperature at two ends of the wall
  • C. Less than the average of the temperature at two ends of the wall
  • D. Depends on the range of temperature

Answer: B. More than the average of the temperature at two ends of the wall

Explanation: When alpha is positive (+ve), the temperature profile curves upwards. It is clear that the temperature at the center is more than that in the case of constant thermal conductivity (which would just be the average).
