Topic: Metrology and Inspection

Which of the following errors are generally distributed in accordance with the Gaussian distribution-

  • A. Controllable errors
  • B. Calibration errors
  • C. Avoidable errors
  • D. Random errors

Answer: D. Random errors

Explanation: Random errors are those which are accidental and whose magnitude and sign cannot be predicted from knowledge of measuring system conditions. Random errors have positive and negative values and their magnitudes are generally distributed in accordance with Gaussian distribution of measurement. Systematic error/controllable error include calibration errors, error due to variation in the atmospheric condition, variation in contact pressure etc. These errors results from irregular procedure that are consistent in action.
