Topic: Microprocessors

A memory system of size 16 k bytes is required to be designed using memory chips which have 12 address lines and 4 data lines each. Then number of such chips required to design the memory system is

  • A. 2
  • B. 4
  • C. 8
  • D. 16

Answer: C. 8

Explanation: Size of each memory chip = $2^{12} \times 4$ bits.
Required memory system of size = $16~\text{k bytes} = 16 \times 1024 \times 8 \text{ bits} = 2^{14} \times 8$ bits.
Number of chips required = $\frac{\text{Total required memory}}{\text{Capacity of one chip}} = \frac{2^{14} \times 8}{2^{12} \times 4} = 2^{2} \times 2 = 8$.
